Lithium sodium titanate insertion-type anode has been synthesized by classical solid-state (dry) and an alternate solution-assisted (wet) sonochemical synthesis routes. Successful synthesis of the target compound has been realized using simple Na- and Li-hydroxide salts along with titania. In contrast to the previous reports, these energy-savvy synthesis routes can yield the final product by calcination at 650 -750 degrees C for limited duration of 1-10 h. Owing to the restricted calcination duration (dry route for 1-2 h and wet route for 1-5 h), they yield homogeneous nanoscale lithium sodium titanate particles. Sono-chemical synthesis reduces the lithium sodium titanate particle size down to 80-100 nm vis-a-vis solid-state method delivering larger (200-500 nm) particles. Independent of the synthetic methods, the end products deliver reversible electrochemical performance with reversible capacity exceeding 80 mAh.g(-1) acting as a 1.3 V anode for Li-ion batteries. Lithium intercalation into double rare earth chromates was carried out. It was found that the compounds NaxLi1-xLa(CrO4)2 belong to the NaLa(CrO4)2 structural type and may be recommended as fast ionic conductors. At small values of x a third polymorphous modification of LiLa(CrO4)2 can be stabilized. Attempts to intercalate lithium into CsLa(CrO4)2 lead to collapse of the lamellar network with the formation of LaCrO4 and alkaline chromates. Ion exchange Li+/H+ data are consistent with these considerations. © 1994.

We report on the mechanical properties of sodium titanate nanowires (Na2Ti3O7 NW) through a combination of bending experiments and theoretical analysis. Na2Ti3O7 NWs with lateral dimensions ranging from 20–700 nm were synthesized by a hydrothermal approach. A focused ion beam (FIB) was used to manipulate the selected Na2Ti3O7 NW over a hole drilled in an indium tin oxide substrate. After welding the nanowire, a series of bending tests was performed. It was observed that the Na2Ti3O7 NW exhibits a brittle behavior, and a nonlinear elastic deformation was observed before failure. By using the modified Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, such nonlinear elastic deformation is found to originate from a combination of surface effects and axial elongation (arising from the bending deformation). The effective Young's modulus of the Na2Ti3O7 NW was found to be independent of the wire length, and ranges from 21.4 GPa to 45.5 GPa, with an average value of 33 ± 7 GPa. The yield strength of the Na2Ti3O7 NW is measured at 2.7 ± 0.7 GPa.

The band structure of the intercalation complex of LiTiS has been computed using a semi-empirical tight-binding method and this is compared with the results of a revised TiS calculation. The results obtained confirm that changes in the basic electrical characteristics of TiS, which occur when it is intercalated with lithium, can be attributed to a rigid-band filling of its lowest unoccupied electron states as has previously been proposed. However, they also suggest that intercalation can act to alter the nature and the dispersion of some of the energy bands in the unintercalated crystal. The bands which are most affected by the process are those which derive from orbitals which have the same symmetry as the lithium 2s orbital, namely, the titanium 4s conduction level and the tightly bound sulphur 3s levels.

The kinetics and the thermodynamics of electrochemical intercalation of lithium into CeO(2)-TiO(2) films prepared by the sol-gel process were studied by galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) as function of the depth of lithium intercalation. The open-circuit-potential versus x in Li(x)(CeO(2)-TiO(2)) curve consists of two straight lines with different slopes, one in the range of 0.03 <= x <= 0.09 and the other of 0.09 < x <= 0.15. The standard Gibbs energy for lithium intercalation Delta G(1)(0) was 6kJ/mol for x = 0.09 in Li(x)(CeO(2)-TiO(2)) at room temperature. The chemical diffusion coefficient value, D(Li+), of lithium intercalation into thin film oxide was 2.14.10(-11) cm(2)/s at x = 0.15, and the value of the component diffusion coefficient D(Li+),(k) was about one order of magnitude lower than the coefficient of chemical diffusion.

Some of the prospective electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries are known to have electronic transport limitations preventing them from being used in the electrodes directly. In many cases, however, these materials may become practical if they are applied in the form of nanocomposites with a carbon component, e.g. via incorporating nanoparticles of the phase of interest into a conducting network of carbon nanotubes. A simple way to prepare oxide-carbon nanotube composites suitable for the electrodes of lithium-ion batteries is presented in this paper. The method is based on low-energy ball milling. An electrochemically active but insulating phase of LiFeTiO4 is used as a test material. It is demonstrated that the LiFeTiO4-carbon nanotube composite is not only capable of having significantly higher capacity (∼105-120 mA h g-1vs. the capacity of ∼65-70 mA h g -1 for the LiFeTiO4 nanoparticles) at a slow current rate but may also operate at reasonably high current rates. © the Partner Organisations 2014.

Sodium titanate was synthesized by the sol-gel method and characterized using X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry, atomic absorption spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and nitrogen physisorption. The non-calcined material was active as a catalyst in transesterification reactions and showed high stability. An appreciable loss of activity on the fourth reuse was accompanied by the appearance of a new species of oxygen and segregated sodium, identified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS spectrum showed that the basic nature of the framework oxygen was inferior to the original basicity, which explained the decline in catalytic activity. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
